Jacob Ivey Hickman, Jr. age 92, died on February 13, 2011 at Aldersgate Retirement Community in Charlotte, NC where he has resided for several years. He was born August 3rd, 1918 in Caldwell County to Jacob Ivey and Ida Downs Hickman. Prior to moving to Aldersgate in 2006, Mr. Hickman and his wife, Margarette Rector Hickman resided in Troy, NC where they moved in 1952. Margarette preceeded him in death in 2006. She was a partner in their business and his companion for 67 years. After moving to Troy, NC in 1952, they bought Troy Ice and Fuel which later became Hickman Oil and Ice Company. He started Triangle Ice Company in 1976 and from this beginning Mr. Hickman and his partners were able to expand the business over all the southeastern states. His other business interests included Central Lumber and Supply Company, Hickman Farms and Hickman Realty. Mr. Hickman was a World War II veteran and was in the European Theater during the last days of the war. Over the years he was active in the community, having served as a Troy City Councilman and participated in many community organizations. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Hickman is survived by three daughters: Barbara Joyner and husband, Herbert of Monroe, Cindy Bass and husband, Jim Osberg of Raleigh, Ivy Harris and husband, Rick of Troy; six grandchildren: David Joyner of Raleigh, Ben Joyner of Charlotte, Megan Thompson and Drew Harris of Troy, Eddie Haywood and Alex Frady of Boone; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Mildred Johnson of New York State and a brother, Paul Hickman of Florida. The family will receive friends from 9 am until service time Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Troy, NC; other times at the home of Rick and Ivy Harris, 447 Troy-Candor Road, Troy. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 am Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Troy, NC. A graveside service and interment will be conducted at 3:30 pm at the Hickman Family Cemetery, Hudson, NC with full military honors. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorials be made to Trinity Fund at Trinity United Methodist Church, PO Box 502, Troy, NC 27371 or the Alzheimer's Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
