G. A. Haywood, Jr., age 83, of 1071 Chip Road, Mt. Gilead died Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro. Mr. Haywood was born September 8, 1926 in Montgomery County, NC, the son of George Arthur and Wincie (Blake) Haywood. He was a former President, Vice President and served on the Board of Directors of Montgomery County Farm Bureau. He also served on the Farm Bureau National Forestry Advisory Committee. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Troy where he served as Sunday School teacher and deacon. He was a retired self-employed farmer and sawmill operator. He served in the Navy and Marines as a pharmacist's mate during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar Haywood and Dudley Haywood, and three sisters, Lannie Haywood, Ina Haywood and Della Mae Tedder. He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 61 years, Helen Liles Haywood and faithful canine friend "Sugar" of the home; three sons: Mike Haywood and wife Jo, Dudley Haywood and wife Pam, and Jeff Haywood, all of Mt. Gilead; one daughter, Shelby H. Rush of Mt. Gilead; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Stella Garner and Alta Allen, both of Mt. Gilead. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy; other times at the home. The funeral will be Sunday at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Troy, 401 E. Main Street, Troy with Dr. Phillips McRae officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard will be in Haywood Family Cemetery, Chip Road, Mt. Gilead. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Troy, 401 E.
